ISLAMIC, Persia (Post-Mongol). Safavids. 'Abbas I, AH 995-1038 / AD 1587-1629. Abbasi (Silver, 23 mm, 9.16 g, 10 h), first silver standard, type A, AH 996 = AD 1588. Within a central cartouche, Shiʿa kalima, ‘lā ilāha illā Allāh / Muḥammad / nabī Allāh ʿAlī w/alī Allāh’ (‘There is no deity but Allah. Muhammad is the prophet of Allah. Ali is the friend of Allah’ in Arabic); the names of the twelve shiʿa imams in Arabic in the four sections around, mostly off flan. Rev. Within a central cartouche, ‘bande-ye shāh-e velāyat Abbās 996’ (‘ʿAbbas, the servant of the king of guardianship [i.e., ʿAli], 996’ in Persian); in the margin, weak traces of ‘khallada Allāh mulkahū wa sulṭānahū wa ʿadlahū wa iḥsānahū ʿalā al-ʿālamīn’ (‘May Allah perpetuate his kingdom, sovereignty, justice, and goodness for the worlds’ in Arabic). Album 2631. Nicely toned. About very fine.
